New film exposes India’s fashion world
more an more fuss from “fashion”
A new Bollywood film takes a long hard look at India’s fashion industry, putting the spotlight on its underbelly of drug abuse, depression and politics at a time when haute couture is making inroads into middle-class homes.
Fashion, which opens in cinemas on Wednesday, comes close on the heels of three high-profile fashion expos in New Delhi and Mumbai, in two weeks that have seen the country’s media obsessed over post-show parties hosted by India’s top designers.
Director Madhur Bhandarkar, an award-winning Bollywood filmmaker who created some of the most memorable female protagonists of Indian cinema, said he hoped to give Indians an intimate, fly-on-the-wall look into the corridors of fashion.
“Two years ago, a common man on the streets in India wouldn’t have cared about models and brands and ramp shows,” Bhandarkar told Reuters. “Suddenly, fashion has entered our lives like never before.”
India’s fashion industry has raised its global profile, following a rise in disposable incomes, victories by Indian beauty queens at international pageants and a multitude of fashion events.

India:Fashion earns Rs 85 mn from in-film advertising
more buzz from “fashion”
His forthcoming film Fashion has got an ‘A’ certificate that may limit his audience size, but director-producer Madhur Bhandarkar has some reason to smile – of the Rs 220 million investment in the movie, it has already earned as much as Rs 85 million (Rs 8.5 crores) from in-film advertisement alone.
A co-production of UTV Motion Pictures and Bhandarkar Entertainment, Fashion has six prestigious brand placements – clothing brands Kimaya and Reebok, Lenovo laptop, Sunsilk shampoo, Cellucom and LG Electronics.
“The brands have been chosen carefully so they are relevant to the scenes where they will be displayed, without causing a jarring note,” said a UTV marketing executive.
Fashion, which stars Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, Mugdha Godse and Arjan Bajwa, is set to release on October 29.
In-film advertising has been gaining momentum in Bollywood. The sole reason is that while the products get visibility at a premium price, serving the purpose of their advertisers, filmmakers also earn handsome revenues by letting the brands get screen space in movies.
According to reports, film placements are currently raking in anything between Rs 500,000 to Rs 50 million for the producers.

Shamita Shetty has a passion for fashion
some news from bollywood
Not many know but Shamita Shetty has acquired a degree in fashion designing. The actress, before embarking on films full time, had planned to pursue a career as a fashion designer. She had even completed a degree course in fashion designing at Mumbai’s SNDT College and was student the college faculty was proud of.
A class mate revealed, “Shamita used to give her 100% to the projects she undertook as a fashion designer. She was brilliant at mixing and matching fabrics and would have definitely been an asset to the fashion world.”
Fabrics of varied hues, printed designs and playing with ideas and giving it a creative expression was something Shamita always felt passionately about.

Fashion se darna mana hai
I´m really exited to watch the film and can´t wait till november!
Priyanka Chopra, who plays the lead in Fashion, on the sets with director Madhur Bhandarkar (TOI Photo) More PicsMadhur Bhandarkar thinks he’s caught in an image trap. More so, when asked to answer questions with the words ‘expose’ or ‘underbelly’ in them. “It’s just my image!” he protests.“People portray me as sort of a moral policeman. The other day I went to Leelavati Hospital to see a friend’s father. I was just chatting in the corridor with my friend after seeing him, when two doctors walked up to me and said, ‘You really need to make a film on how a hospital functions. There are such malpractices that go on in large hospitals’… Another time, I was picking up DVDs at a shop when two women came up and told me how important it was that I make a movie that would expose the racket of educational institutions charging money for admissions. I have been branded with that image!”
You earned that image – not that it’s one to be defensive about – with movie after movie, Madhur. Isn’t that image the reason why the fashion world’s petrified at the prospect of your movie’s release?
“I know a perception has been created by some elements that Fashion is going to have a negative take on the fashion industry, that it’s going to ‘expose’ models, undercurrents, and, well, gay designers – let’s be frank. But I have no such agenda. The models, the designers, all of them, they are all part of society. My film will just reflect all that’s there. It’s about characters, yaar. You have all sorts of characters – metrosexuals, heterosexuals, the gay designers – everybody who inhabits the word of fashion. Ab fashion world mein gangsters toh nahin aayenge na ?” Accepted, Madhur. How they’ll be portrayed is what’s giving sleepless nights to more than a few, though.
“This is the image problem! I have been given the image that Madhur goes about exploring and exposing industries and things – sometimes he hits the page 3 people, sometimes he hits the corporate world… But that’s not what I am doing. We are not targeting the industry. It is a very human story, the most emotional story of my career so far. And if I were demeaning the industry, would leading names connected to the industry – Wendell Rodericks, Narendra Kumar Ahmed, Shane-Falguni, Rita Dhody – be associated with the film? They say models are apprehensive. I have about 11 fashion shows in the film, with top-of-the-line models – Anchal Kumar, Jessy Randhawa, Nayanika Chatterjee – walking the ramp. Why would they come to be part of a project that demeans modelling?” ,
